March 30 – 31, 2019 : Overnight trip to Kyotango
Students had a great opportunity to make a overnight trip to Kyotango, which is located in the northern part of Kyoto prefecture thanks to the inbound business company “Tangonian” based in Kyotango, Kyotango City, and Kyotango City Tourism Association.
Local guides gave us special tours during the trip and students enjoyed the local feel of the area. We appreciate this great opportunity!!
Below is a report by Nicholas Lombardo (KCJS30 Spring, Columbia University).
Visiting Kyotango was an excellent opportunity to see another, quieter, but no less beautiful and homely side of Kyoto Prefecture. I am very glad I was able to join this trip – and come to learn about a town rich with local charm and to meet many kind people along the way. We had the chances to eat at a delicious restaurant on a cliff by the sea, observe rich local history at the museum in town, visit two local shrines (one of which is one of the few in existence that has “komaneko” cat figures, not “komainu” dog figures, protecting the precinct!), experience “singing” sand by a beautiful beach, hear about cloth making at a local workshop, and chat with local residents at a language exchange party. At each step along the way, I felt as if I was getting to know people and a city both proud of and excited to share and preserve their local culture, but also humble and thoughtful of the relationship of these things to the surrounding areas and changes over time. I will remember this trip fondly as an important part of my time here in Kyoto, and in Japan.
