Fri. Mar. 18. 2022Guest Lecture Series : Environmental Issues within the Japanese Development Aid Framework” by Prof. Makibayashi

On March 17, the KCJS hosted the Guest Lecture Series #3 “Environmental Issues within the Japanese Development Aid Framework” by Prof. Makibayashi at the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, Doshisha University in Kyoto. Thank you all for joining us today, and thank you to Prof. Makibayashi for this wonderful opportunity!

Below is a comment from a participant:
Professor Makibayashi had the tough assignment of explaining a complicated topic in a short lecture, but she did a fantastic job introducing an audience of mixed backgrounds to the shifts in Japan’s development aid history. This was my first foray into this topic, and her lecture was a fascinating opening. I’m a Master’s student studying urban planning, and there are many important links between urbanization, economic development, and sustainability. Faced with the multi-faceted threats of climate change, we must invest carefully in the paths that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for climate change impacts. This is particularly imperative in regions that are both rapidly urbanizing and already experiencing consequences of climate change. As a major source of international aid, especially in Asia, Japan plays a significant role in shaping investment and development through its aid goals and agenda. Many thanks to Professor Makibayashi and KCJS for organizing this guest lecture! -Adela Mu (University of Washington, Seattle)
